What's your recommendation for a good lens for portrait and a beginner zoom lens?
I need a good lens for portrait and also a zoom lens (other than 18-55mm). Please tell me your recommendation based on your experience. Actually, it would be great if there is a zoom lens that is also great for portraits, so I don't have to buy 2 different lenses. I use a Nikon D60, btw. THANKS!
I would suggest before you buy your lens go to a shop and try it out, it may cost a little more but your requirements mean if you don't that you could be disappointed.
Ok, so on a Nikon D60 with it's smaller than full frame sensor the idea "portrait" lens is one that gives a "normal" view. By normal view I mean one that will reproduce in your photo the same sort of field of view you get with your eye's naturally. Such that if you hold the camera to one eye and keep the other eye open the images you see are the same size and the perspective is the same. On your D60 this means a lens around the 50mm mark for the portraits. The other requirement for a portrait lens is a large aperture, f/2.8 being minimum spec, f/2, f/1.8, or f/1.4 being better. Having a large aperture (small f/-number) allows you to play with the depth of field for artistic effect.
Now for the zoom, you have to decide what zoom you need or want, keeping in mind that the greater the zoom range the more likely it is that the lens will be compromising quality for range. Say you wanted a 200mm maximum zoom (in many cases this is going to be enough) you would be looking at a lens that covers say 50-200mm @ constant f/2.8 to meet your needs.
Problem is, there is no such lens readily available!
