Why are smokestacks on old ocean liners not perpendicular to the deck, but rather slanted slightly astern?
With the size of the boats I'm talking about, I can't imagine it's to reduce drag.
Looks is one reason, the main one is to stop the exhaust blowing down the downwind side of the funnel to deck level. In general the sir flow will separate the exhaust fumes at the top of the funnels, so the patrons don't get sick.
So it's a practical reason. Shows how good practical design looks good too. The old saying is "Form follows Function" - it's why a boat just looks 'right'.
