How to set up a network in this case?
I have a laptop(vista) with built in wireless and a desktop (xp, no wireless adapter or built in wireless) attached with cable internet
I want to buy a wireless router in order to share the internet for both my laptop and desktop. Which brand and type is best for me?
Do I need a wireless adapter for my desktop?
How would you set up this network? (it's ok if the desktop maintains wired!)

Just about every wireless router also has a 4 port ethernet (wired) switch built into it. You can go pretty basic if you're just trying to get wireless in the house - pretty much any wireless router (with 4 port switch) will be fine for you, so go with whatever is cheaper.
If you already have a cable modem, all you do is unplug the network cable going from the modem to your computer, and make it go from the modem to your new router's Internet port. Then, another cable going from any of the other ports to the back of your computer (no wireless card needed). Then just follow the instructions that come with the router you purchase to setup the wireless connection and password.
Recommended brands would bey Linksys, Netgear, Belkin, and D-Link - really, whatever's the cheapest for your purposes will be fine.
