Magic the Gathering: First Strike/Double strike?
How does first strike work in a regular combat phase and in one with an opposing creature with first strike.
How does double strike work?
Examples would be appreciated.
Creatures with "first strike" has an advantage in terms of dealing damage "first", before an opposing creature (without first strike). I think this is very much clear to you.
In cases that both the attacking creature and blocking creature has first strike, it nullifies the advantage and both would deal damage to each other, at the same time.
Example 1;
2/2 black creature, first strike vs. 6/1 green creature without first strike
After combat: black creature will kill green creature, due to first strike (black deals 2 damage first, killing a creature with a toughness of 1)
Example 2:
2/2 black creature, first strike vs. 6/1 green creature with first strike
After combat: both creatures are killed (black deals 2 damage, same time as green deals 6 damage, both creatures receive lethal damage, and at the same time)
A creature with double strike, deals damage twice during (1) first strike speed and (2) regular damage speed.
A 2/2 creature with double strike has the potential to deal a maximum of 4 damage to a creature or player.
Example 3:
2/2 black creature, double strike (attacking) vs. 6/1 green creature without first strike (blocking)
After combat:
(1) black creature kills green creature (2 first strike damage dealt to 6/1 creature, lethal damage)
(2) defending player receives 2 combat damage (due to the double strike). this is possible, because the blocking green creature was already killed by the "first strike" damage. thus defending player will receive the next two damage, as allowed by the double strike rule.
