My VS diamond has developed a crescent shaped crack on the surface. Does this mean the stone was flawed?
I could almost flake it off with my nail, and it is quite large, about 2mm, covering about 20% of the surface. I am not aware of it having been knocked.
This sounds highly suspicious. Diamonds can split or crack along cleavage planes if knocked but it is unusual. I presume that you received an a certificate from a reliable laboratory when you purchased your stone but even so I would take it to a reliable jeweller and have it tested, if it proves not to be a diamond you have grounds for legal action against the retailer. Whatever the result you should go back to the retailer you got it from and make a complaint. Your insurance policy should cover accidental damage like this.
Hope this helps a little.
